There have been hundreds of media stories published in the U.S. and around the world since Jan. 14, 2015, the day after it was first reported that visitors to Disneyland got measles and presumably infected other people in California, Washington, Utah and Colorado.1 Like wildfire, the story spread globally even though there was - and still is - limited information about the 51 lab-confirmed cases of measles public health officials say are linked to the happiest place on earth. According to a Jan. 23 Health Advisory issued by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), “no source case for the outbreak has been identified.” 2

Demonizing of Parents and Their Children

The U.S. has a population of more than 320 million people and 38 million people live in California, so it is curious why a handful of measles cases prompted one California newspaper to quickly place blame on parents making informed vaccine choices, calling them “ignorant” and engaged in a “self-absorbed rejection of science.” 3 Astroturfers 4 and trolls 5 6 saw that kind of talk as a green light to do more of it on public comment boards, suggesting that children with vaccine-related brain injuries are genetic mutants and calling mothers of vaccine injured children “liars” and “witches.” 7

Pediatrician Leads Blame and Shame Game

Dr. James Cherry, 8 a prominent UCLA pediatrician and infectious disease expert, publicly joined in the blame and shame game, hurling insults at parents declining to give children every one of the government recommended 69 doses of 16 vaccines, including two MMR shots. Dr. Cherry said, “There are some pretty dumb people out there,” 9 and “Some people are just terribly selfish.” 10

Name-calling is a convenient way to deflect attention from inconvenient truths about vaccine failures and the dissolving myth of vaccine acquired herd immunity. 11

A Very Highly Vaccinated U.S. Population

Case in point: there were 644 cases of measles reported in America in 2014, 12 even though 95% of children entering kindergarten 13 have gotten two doses of MMR vaccine, which is also true for 92% of school children ages 13 to 17 years. 14 Plus, less than one percent of children under age three are completely unvaccinated and 92% of them have gotten one or more MMR shots. 15 In some states, the MMR vaccination rate is approaching 100 percent. 16

measles-map.jpg
According to Dr. Cherry, measles vaccine acquired herd immunity is in effect with a measles vaccination rate of more than 90 percent. 17 Well, that has been true in America since 1981 with one dose of MMR vaccine 18 and since 2000 for two doses of MMR vaccine, which is one reason why the CDC declared measles eradicated from the U.S. in 2000. 19

But, clearly, measles virus has not been eradicated from the U.S., just like measles has not been eradicated from any other country and emerging scientific evidence suggests it never will be - no matter how many doses of MMR vaccine are mandated for every man, woman and child in the world. 20 21 22 23

Why is a big deal being made out of 51 cases of measles reported in the U.S.?

Flu Shots That Don’t Work

Perhaps public health officials would prefer that the media and the public focus on a handful of measles cases at Disneyland and not focus on the fact that millions of Americans have gotten flu shots that don’t work and health care workers are being fired if they don’t get flu shots that don’t work. 24 25 If you got a flu shot this year, it will do absolutely nothing to protect you from the influenza strain making most people sick. 26 27 28 Worse, scientists have confirmed that the more often you get an annual flu shot, the less effective it is! 29 30

How many vaccinated people are attending schools, going to grocery stories and working in hospitals and doctors offices without a clue they are infected with and shedding and transmitting influenza virus because they only have mild flu symptoms or no symptoms at all. 31 32 And it is anybody’s guess how many children are getting sick after live virus influenza vaccine is sprayed up their noses 33 or are shedding vaccine strain live virus that could make other people sick. 34 35

Pertussis Vaccine Failing

The pertussis vaccine is failing, too. 36 37
measles-commentary.jpg

Like measles, in recent years there have been huge increases in reports of B. pertussis whooping cough among children and adults in California and other states and many of those people have been vaccinated. 38 39 That was true for pertussis outbreaks in the U.S. 30 years ago, too. 40 41

Now public health officials are finally admitting the truth that many scientists have been publishing for a long time: you can be fully vaccinated for pertussis, get infected and show atypical or no symptoms and spread whooping cough to vaccinated and unvaccinated persons. 42 43 44

In fact, Dr. Cherry himself admits that there are millions of undiagnosed B. pertussis whooping cough cases every year in America, 45 even though 95% or more of America’s school children have gotten multiple doses of pertussis containing vaccinations. 46 In 2013, Dr. Cherry wrote, “Neither B. pertussis infection or pertussis vaccination elicit long-lasting immunity. Infection and illness repeatedly occur in all ages throughout life.” 47

So much for the myth of pertussis vaccine acquired herd immunity. 48

Measles Vaccine Failing

It isn’t very scientific to blame pertussis or influenza outbreaks on unvaccinated people. And it isn’t very scientific to blame measles outbreaks on unvaccinated people, either.

In some outbreaks of measles in California last year, nearly 20 percent of the people had been vaccinated. 49 The CDC says that 12% of the measles cases associated with Disneyland were vaccinated, some of them with at least two doses of MMR vaccine. 50

Measles vaccine acquired herd immunity is a dissolving myth, too. 51 52 53

Public health doctors are scrambling to explain leaks in measles vaccine immunity 54 55 and have come up with this lame excuse: they say they just discovered that 1 measles vaccinated adult in 10 is now susceptible to measles because vaccine immunity wears off. 56 They call it “waning immunity.” 57

More MMR Shots Coming?

Now get ready for the sucker punch: Dr. Cherry told a TV network last week that the solution to waning measles vaccine immunity is to “give additional doses” of MMR vaccine to adults. 58 59

That’s right. Let’s just mandate more MMR shots for millions of Americans and make Merck’s stockholders really happy. 60

But who is Dr. Cherry kidding? We all know that adults are way too hard to pin down – unless you threaten them with loss of a job or medical care or put them in prison - so I predict that the third MMR shot will more likely target high school students and people trying to get a college education. 61

Dr. Cherry’s solution to reported measles cases at Disneyland reminds me of when doctors told parents in 1990 that they didn’t realize one dose of MMR vaccine would fail to provide lifelong immunity after all, so kids are going to have to get a second dose of MMR. 62

Inconvenient Scientific Truths About Measles Vaccine

The inconvenient scientific truth about measles in Disneyland and around the world is that public health doctors do not know how many vaccinated people can be infected with measles, show few or no symptoms and transmit measles to other people. 63 Government health officials do not conduct rountine active surveillance of vaccinated people to find out if they are experiencing asymptomatic or atypical measles and transmitting it to others.

In addition, there are published studies demonstrating that people given live virus measles vaccine can be infected with vaccine strain measles virus and shed vaccine strain measles virus. 64 65 66 Health officials do not conduct routine active surveillance of people getting live MMR vaccine to monitor for vaccine strain measles virus infection, shedding and the potential for transmission.

Is It Measles or Something Else?

measles-symptoms.jpg
Most doctors and parents don’t know that the CDC warns, “During outbreaks, measles vaccine is administered to help control the outbreak, and in these situations, vaccine reactions may be mistakenly classified as measles cases. A small proportion of measles vaccine recipients experience rash and fever 10–14 days following vaccination. 67

Yes, MMR vaccine can cause vaccine strain measles infection that looks just like measles. 68

Plus, other common viral infections – like adenovirus infections – can look just like measles with rash, fever and conjunctivitis symptoms 69 70 and be misdiagnosed as measles UNLESS there is expensive RNA lab testing done to confirm that what looks like measles really is wild type measles. 71

Plans to Further Damage California Vaccine Exemptions

And now for the second sucker punch, at least for families living in California: Dr. Pan, the pediatrician politician who lobbied in 2013 to pass a bill restricting non-medical vaccine exemptions for children to attend school, told one California newspaper last week that he intends to introduce new legislation to do more damage to the ability of parents to weigh the benefits and risks of vaccination and make voluntary vaccine choices for their children. 72
disneyland-park.jpg

Will California health officials take away religious and conscientious belief vaccine exemptions and leave doctors like Dr. Pan and Dr. Cherry in charge of who gets a public education?

Using Disneyland to Move the Goalposts

The hype about 51 cases of measles reportedly linked to Disneyland 73 has more to do with covering up vaccine failures and propping up the dissolving myth of vaccine acquired herd immunity than it does about protecting the public health. It has a lot to do with defensive doctors trying to blame a minority of parents who are refusing to place irrational faith in them and their moving goal posts, 74 and are choosing instead to think and act rationally. 75

That third MMR shot is coming to America and so is a massive Pharma-led lobby attempt to demonize and punish 76 77 all Americans who defend the human right to exercise informed consent to medical risk-taking, including vaccine risk-taking. 78 The calls to strike down those who do not use every dose of the growing list of government-mandated vaccines, is on a fast track.79 80 It will include banning the unvaccinated from exercising the right to get a public education, medical care,81 employment and many other human and civil rights.

Americans Have A Choice to Make

measles-fist.jpg
The battle lines are clearly drawn. Now Americans have a choice to make: will we stand up and fight to protect our human right to make voluntary decisions about which vaccines we buy and use, or will we permit liability free drug companies and government health officials to take that freedom from us? 82

I find it especially disturbing that they are not doing anything to determine if this outbreak was, in fact, caused by the VACCINE STRAIN of measles. I do hope the public wakes up and starts pushing back!

Has anyone mentioned the fact that we have many illegal immigrants coming across our border that have not been immunized and could be bringing disease to the US? Why don't we hear more about that instead of hearing about parents who are choosing not to immunize? Parents have the right to make the choice for medical care of their children, NOT the government! Children can live through these childhood illnesses and they probably build up a better immunity to them after having the disease.

I would like to know how many who caught the disease were vaccinated and how many were not. i haven't heard this yet which makes me suspicious that most may have been vaccinated.

Laurie, if the refugees from South America are not vaccinated (vaccination does not mean immunization), then they are likely to be much healthier than American children who are the most vaccinated in the world.

My college age adult kids both just got measles. They were Not at Disneyland. The LA health department doesn't know where they picked it up. So glad as they are through it and don't have to be put through measles VAX scare for adults. It should be noted that they were both quarantined early enough so that neither was in contact with anyone while contagious.

The media also fails to report the symptoms and prognosis for the people who contracted whatever strain of measles this is. They report on this mild outbreak like these people have contracted Ebola and have been given a death sentence. ~100 people out of 320 million Americans are going to experience symptoms that are no worse than the common flu, and the media goes hysterical.

The call to sue parents who don't vaccinate, as implied by the title of the article in reference #76 [76 Diamond D. Measles Is Spreading and Kids Might Die. Sue Parents Who Didn’t Vaccinate? Absolutely. Forbes Jan. 28, 2015] is especially disturbing. And if you or your child gets the vaccine and is vaccine injured, can you sue the pharmaceautical company? Absolutely not.

I heard a story on the radio about a family who had been to a California Costco being notified that their child may have been exposed to measles as they had learned that an infected child had been there. As a result she was asked to quarantine (her vaccinated) child for 14 days. The mother came on to say how she was paying the consequences of other parents irresponsibility etc. If the vaccine is so effective why are the vaccinated children so concerned about getting measles? Forget the quarantine! If there is an outbreak and let's say ALL unvaccinated children get measles and 12% of vaccinated children also get sick. I suspect the parents of unvaccinated children still prefer that their children got the measles, rather than the vaccine. And the parents of vaccinated children should put the pressure on Merck for its failed vaccine, not the parents who make conscious decisions. It almost seems like mandated quarantines are a way to infuriate parents of vaccinated children, but the rage is targeted towards parents making conscious decisions as though they are responsible for the virus. Ridiculous. Getting sick, and healing are a part of life. Getting disabled by forced vaccination is not.

I am absolutely sickened by the media push to denigrate those who disagree with the political view of health/wellness (i.e. vaccinations) This is not tolerable! I read today that a man named, Alex Berezow, of USA today, published an article that demands anti-vax parents be JAILED! This young socialist who calls himself a "scientist" and is spewing HATE against the idea of FREEDOM of CHOICE in our health! Also noted, Melinda Gates responding that anti-vaxers do NOT have a valid argument and then proceeded to show why "herd immunity" works! This is unbelievable! She and her buddies are pushing this all around the world and Bill Gates has even spoken of population control with this! Yes, we all need to be vigilant. God bless and SAVE America from the greedy elite who have CONFLICT OF INTEREST! SHAMEFUL!

I have been concerned and have been following the progression of vaccine mandates since 1969 when my first child was born. Now that "truth be told" about reactions and damage from vaccines, I am angry that I didn't have a chance for "informed consent" years ago. Please Parents, use logic and common sense when considering vaccine schedules for your children. I am shocked to learn that children now must submit to endless rounds of vaccinations and boosters. It's absolute madness in my estimation! My children did get chicken pox between three and seven years of age, all at the same time! I kept them at home, fed them well, and allowed their own natural immune systems to kill the virus. All four of my children fought the virus off in good time, and I didn't have to worry about it again. Have the doctors in this country forgotten that humans are able to do that?

It's frightening what we are doing to our children. An entire generation sacrificed on the altar of pseudoscience. I hope everyone reads "Dissolving Illusions," a powerful counterpoint to the self-appointed "experts," like Assembly member Pan and Dr. Cherry. In California it is also illegal to serve full-fat milk in public schools-in my school most of the kids threw the milk away, and now they are mandating a starvation diet for school lunches: : "an entrée such as pasta, fruits and vegetables." Must have as little fat as possible. These are the new USDA guidelines, which are not based on any science at all. It's no wonder they won't eat this crap. The lunatics are truly in charge of the asylum.

I am 74 and a retired engineer living in the UK who got measles and chicken pox as a child and by luck avoided TB, small pox and polio until eventually vacinated . But I saw my beautiful granddaughter develop a range of autistic symptoms within a week of having the MMR vacine. There is no doubt that it effcts sensitive children and some very seriously. There is no scientific need to have a triple vacine in one injection and neither is there any justification to use a mercury compound in any vacine or tooth filling.

WAY TO GO GIRL!!!!!!!! I agree with you 100% If the Pharmaceutical Companies had their way, there would be vaccines for every ailment out there!!! They seem to forget that keeping our immune systems healthy will enable our bodies to fight whatever comes our way. Keep up the good work…..you are doing a great job. Question? How many of the kids that got measles were vaccinated???? Editors note: Barbara does state in the commentary that out of the 51 CDC confirmed measles cases associated with Disneyland, 12% were vaccinated and some had gotten at least 2 MMR shots. Please click on the references, and you can see the numbers the CDC published in last Friday's Health Advisory (6 vaccinated cases, 4 with at least 2 MMR shots.) Your health. Your family. I just saw where a Palm Desert, Ca school told parents of Unvaccinated children to keep there kids home for a few days. This is such Insanity. In the Olden Days - we got the measles.....got over it. Our Parents knew what to do - like stay home. This is Not the same Measles...this I am sure, I think it is an Mutated form from Vaccines. They reported how many of these children HAD been vaccinated - over 1/2 of them. Measles is not a deadly Disease..just like Mumps which we got-and got over. Get it - build up your Immunity to these things. My son vaccinated in the 70's - he almost died and had Multi-infections after these Vaccines. His Pediatrician said No More - and he Never got another one. Got thru Life/schools/illnesses just fine.

yeah blame unvaccinated, anything to avoid admitting vaccines dont work. even with the flu shot, they admit only 23% effectiveness yet they maintain its still safe. vaccination is a choice. if vaccines are so safe, then why did the National Vaccine Injury Act of 1986 provide pharmaceutical companies and doctors with legal immunity in case a vaccine causes death or neurological disorder. basically if your child suffers a life altering reaction, theres nobody to blame, they are legally protected from liability. if theyre so confident in vaccines, remove this legal shield. Vaccine logic basically is "this is 100% safe and effective, but if it doesnt work, dont blame me." I would buy half the crap they were selling if only they stop hiding behind this blanket. Most parents have no idea this is the case.

Removing the religious and personal belief exemption in CA won't leave Dr. Pan or anyone else in charge of deciding who gets a public education. That decision will still lie squarely on the shoulders of the parents. They can choose to avail themselves of the public education system by complying with the vaccination and immunization requirements deemed reasonable and societally desirable by lawmakers, based on the empirical evidence embraced by the vast majority of the scientific community, or they can choose to homeschool or find a parochial school that does not maintain such requirements. The choice will still be up to the parents, just like it is in MS and WV where non-medical exemptions do not exist.

Why isn't anyone talking about the fact that Merck is on trial for fabricating and throwing out MMR test results to keep a 95% effective rate and approval from the FDA. Who on Earth would think big pharma has our best interests in mind? And our kids are paying the price. Why isn't mainstream media talking about this!

when ebola came to america, suddenly the stocks shot up for the ebola vaccine. I have a feeling this measles outbreak is of similar politics. Merk is under fire for a study that was tainted and fabricated. People were starting to not trust the vaccine. At the same time Michigan had been in the work of setting up a new exemption method for some time Because of the high rate of non vaxed. It smells like this is a political move to raise hysteria to cause people to pressure others to vaccinate "peer pressure" and fear and then the stocks will rise on the mmr vaccine A little far fetched maybe but just a "thought"

There are more and more excellent articles being written how the drug companies have lied and hidden vital information and how these diseases were almost gone BEFORE vaccination began due to improved sanitation, hygiene, diet, etc. We need that information to be blasted all over the front page of every newspaper and on every TV news show. The IGNORANCE and ARROGANCE on the part of those who keep pushing for vaccination is appalling.

How can we get a LAW that will make it mandatory to educate health care workers on what a vaccine reaction looks like, how to treat it, and strict guidelines how to document and track the outcome. Which could NEVER be bought, manipulated or hacked by the pharmaceutical companies. A LAW A LAW A LAW to stop this madness!

My sister had the measles and mumps(late 1970's) after having been vaccinated years prior. My mom took myself and my younger sister to get a booster. We never got either. The problem is we were already infected. The truth is our immune systems were strong enough and we would not have gotten it anyway or at least we did not know it. What is interesting is they never vaccinated or gave a booster to our parents. Surprise surprise, they did not get them either.

A good point of contracting measles in Dizzy land is now they have natural immunity to the disease. People also fail to remember that in the past many people died from these diseases because they became dehydrated.

as a veterinarian who has been in practice for almost 50 years, I can say that veterinarians have been severely criticized for OVERVACCINATING our patients and new recommendations are the targeting of patients for vaccination and the concept of core vs. noncore vaccines. Yet we still insist on overvaccination of our human population.

Sooooooo MMR vaccine doesn't actually prevent measles? All those vaccinated people that supposedly got measles at Disneyland? If you believe the vaccine prevents measles, you do not have any right to be angry with parents of unvaccinated children because, logically, your child is protected - right? If the MMR vaccine actually works, there should be no measles outbreak. this is silliness...

So funny how some people blame illegal immigrants for bringing disease to the U.S. Please get inform before anyone assume something like that. For example, many countries in Latin America people still have a primitive style of living, they grow their own food, they believe more in natural medicine because they know is the best also air could be cleaner than so many other big cities. I strongly believe that the secret to a strong and healthy immune system is allowing yourself to naturally acquire a disease. As a parent of an otherwise perfectly healthy child, this is the process by which I have chosen to allow her to develop. However, it has been difficult to acquire natural infection due to the prevelance of vaccine aquired immunity in the school systems. While this may seem to be a good thing, I fear it is not so much. People are relying on a perception of immunity that is proving to be unpredictable. As my daughter goes off to college and becomes more worldly, I would like for her to have immunity she can depend on for life. Ironically, it is I who am frustrated witht he pro-vaxers for depriving my daughter the opportunity to build the best possible immune system the way God designed it to be.

Its sad that physicians don't research the drugs they hand out like candy. Illness is scary there's no doubt about that, but so are vaccines and several other medications doctors so easily and comfortably prescribe. Doing your own research and knowing that opting out of vaccines is within you rights is important. There are hundreds of vaccine websites that provide statistics and data at your disposal, you took the time to get knocked up now take the time to ensure your child's future is a healthy one. Regardless of your choice, make it educated, that way you can back your decision 100% and when an epidemic occurs you can feel comfortable instead of stressed.

I have taken alot of heat from a particular college age relative, seams to be very smart on paper, yet has tried to bully me with his barage of comments on FB until I deleted him. I have not put it out there that we do not vax to my whole family as I feel it is my choice as a parent and I do not have to advertise nor defend my choices to them or anyone else. I also do not preach to others about what they should do with their children. I am so infuriated by the trolls, on line stalkers, who seam to either be paid by or work for big pharm. I am not anti science, I have a firm belief in the scientific method. My child is the wonderful product of the science of IVF. My child was born with a blood infection, spent 2 weeks in the nicu pumped full of antibiotics, and I am thankful for the scientist and Dr's who because of their research and care my child is still with us today 4.5 years later. We decided that due to her difficult start we were not going to damage that little ammune system any further with vax. Between the terrible infection and the heavy dose of antibiotics my baby already had a huge hit to their immune system and gut flora. What I have issue with is that the "studies" accepted by the CDC and FDA are fully funded and mostly preformed by the very companies that benefit from the sell of the vax and drugs. Yet I, and other parents like me, are ridiculed as being "cult" like followers. When in realitiy if you were to look at a society that places its belief in something as it is a truth based on biased information, we would all think how gulable that society is. So sick and tired of this BS blame on the un vax for the faliure of a flawed system.

Interesting that a couple of the references cited by this article, #38 and #39 in particular, implicitly and explicitly state that the occurrence of diseases like measles and pertussis in the vaccinated population have to do with the schedule of vaccinations and not whether the vaccines are effective.

On the New York CBS Local Channel this morning Wednesday, February 4, 2015. The talk is about measles outbreak and from what everyone is saying that the measles vaccinate is safe and is 100% effective. Is it really? If that is the case where are these outbreaks coming from? Doesn't anyone know that some vaccinated people are the ones infecting others? What about our immune system, isn't it equipped to deal with these infections. If we can start making sure that the foods we feed our families, water we drink, what we put on our skin and what we breathe in our environment are not filled with chemicals, etc.., do we really need these vaccinates that are not risk free?

I chose to stop vaccinating my 4 children 17 years ago after 2 of my children had seizures after DPT, 1 had an asthma attack after DPT and another broke out in a full body rash not able to lift his head off the pillow at 15 months old from his MMR vaccine. They were at the doctors sick constantly. Enough! The decision not to vaccinate was the best health decision I could have eve made for my children. My children have only needed antibiotics 2x in 17 years. Only 2 sick visits for 4 children in seventeen years. 4 children and their sick visits to the doctor decreased by 95% after I stopped vaccinating them. That was 17 years ago. They are 25-24-21- and 18 years old. Stronger and healthier than ever. Bottom line -If vaccinations were effective and NOT DANGEROUS it would not be necessary for the US government to create a vaccine injury fund provided by federal statutes and run by 4 government agencies! Americans should have the right to choose parents should have the right to choose. We are a free society not a NAZI STATE!

Statistically, there is linear, positive correlation between the increase in "vaccinations" required for children and the increase in Autism, since 1985. The correlation means that the alleged "vaccinations" are responsible for the increase in autism. I'm 17 and have never been vaccinated. I've never really thought much about it much, unfortunately this measles media storm is causing other students and even teachers to be scared of me. I'm old enough now to make this decision for myself, and honestly im glad its mine to make, but I'm honestly terrified to pick a side on this issue. On one hand I don't really think having measles would be that bad and when its over I'd have an actual immunity, rather than a partial one. Plus this is my body and I don't want to add unnecessary toxins. On the other hand I work with kids in the summer who have 22q which leads to weak immune systems and I'd never forgive myself if I could have prevented getting one of them sick. Still, when I was in 1st grade I got chicken pox from a kid who was vaccinated so who's to say my vaccination is going to stop me from getting someone sick. I've never felt so 50/50 split on an issue or had to make a decision that could so drastically effect my life... Opinions?

NPR has been doing a lot of reporting lately, slanted in my opinion, for vaccines/against anti-vaxxers. Doing a facebook search of 'NPR Vaccines' returns a litany of pro vaccine articles. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is on NPR's list of contributors per their 2014 annual report, and then there's this article on Bill Gates' NPR contributions: http://www.breitbart.com/big-journalism/2013/12/16/gates-foundation-pumps-cash-into-npr-multimedia-platform/ BMGF is known for their pro vaccine stance and this recent article titled 'Bill Gates condemns anti-vaxx trend' http://www.salon.com/2015/01/28/bill_gates_condemns_anti_vaxx_trend_its_unfortunate/, leaves no doubt where he is on this issue. And now the attempts to legislate out the exemptions. Bill and Melinda Gates foundation may well be the catalyst behind recent publicity and attacks on anyone who chooses to reduce, delay or eliminate vaccinations. It's obvious to me anyway that NPR is doing his bidding. I think he's made it his personal goal to eliminate individual choice and exemptions where vaccines are concerned. It definitely seems like an organized effort with all the publicity and legislation coming together in a perfect storm. It would be nice to see NVIC comment on some of the NPR articles showing up on facebook. The level of attack by mainstream vaccine proponents in the comments is scary.

Sometimes people choke on their food and die. Yet, no ones says we should stop eating. Is there a risk from vaccines? Sure, but it is very small and usually mild. Vaccines have saved millions of lives. Not having your children vaccinated is absurd. If you have questions, talk to your family doctor. If you have concerns about a specific vaccine or the recommended vaccine schedule, discuss these with your doctor and develop a plan that works for you. But understand, that you are not a doctor, that doctors read the medical research literature and have the training to know what they are reading. Mainstream medical opinion is not prefect of course. But if you follow it, you will get better results on average than if you base your decisions on stuff you see on the internet.

To Mandi: There are so many variables in this decision. Are you in an area that has a TRUE outbreak concern. Has anyone in your family been harmed by a vaccine? Are you yourself immune compromised? Chances are, if you have never been vaccinated, in good health, and are in a high risk area, that one measles vaccine can be given and will not affect you too harshly. (However it could.) But the risk vs. benefit may persuade. If you are in an area that hasn't seen a case at all, or if a family member has had a reaction that could VERY likely be hereditary, you may want to pass. I don't vaccinate anymore, but had a rusty nail penetrate skin and chose to give the tetanus in that situation. The benefit of the vaccine outweighed the risk of harm to me at that point. It wasn't combined with 4 other vaccines and it was given when needed. I was thankful to have that choice. Don't let anyone coerce you. There is risk to every decision we make. Research and make an educational decision that you can live with.

The CDC website breaks down the number of confirmed cases. About half of those affected were unvaccinated. Another 45% could not be documented as vaccinated. Approximately 4% were vaccinated. The strain of measles is Genotype B3, a strain we are not vaccinated against in the US. This strain of virus first appeared in 2008, in the Phillipines. The CDC website states that the outbreak stemmed from "foreign travelers" who had been exposed while travelling. They state that "at this time, no source case for the outbreak has been identified, but it is likely that a traveler (or more than one traveler) who was infected with measles overseas visited one or both of the Disney parks in December during their infectious period." http://emergency.cdc.gov/HAN/han00376.asp

It is ridiculous that so much fuss is being made over 51 cases of measles, when there are 38 million people in California. Measles is not Ebola--not a deadly disease. I remember in the sixties when I was in high school, and there was a measles epidemic. I didn't get it because I had measles as a child. The students who got measles (I went to an all-girls school) had to stay home and miss some school days. Other than that, I am not personally aware of any harmful results from the epidemic. I was born in 1944, and I don't remember anyone being concerned about measles, mumps, or chicken pox. Those were considered normal childhood diseases and not dangerous. In about 1960, my younger brother, who was only about one year old or less, came down with whooping cough after his 3rd DTP shot (which was supposed to protect him). He was very sick, but recovered. He was the only one in the family (of 9 children) who ever had whooping cough. The next child, my youngest brother, had no vaccinations as a child, and was always very healthy. Why is there so much concern among authorities and the media about measles, and not much concern about the epidemic of autism? Autism rates have risen as the number of recommended childhood vaccines has increased. Babies in the U.S. are among the most highly vaccinated infants in the world, and the U.S. has one of the highest rates of infant death among developed nations. In addition, one out of every 5 or 6 children in the U.S. now has a learning disability. I'm very concerned that parents may lose their freedom of choice in regard to vaccinating their children.

Maybe I'm naive, but in my day (1940s-1950s) just about all us kids got measles, mumps, chickenpox, and German measles. When our pediatrician found out I had German measles, he told the family that he was going to bring a young woman soon to be married to our home so she could get the disease before she had kids. (German measles can cause birth defects -- I think mainly deafness.) The polio vaccine was a miracle, because every week, we knew kids who got polio and were in an "iron lung," and a lot of kids wore braces on their leg/s and many used crutches all their years in school. A senior friend I have now, has recently had some sort of a recurrence of polio, and has a very, very difficult time walking. Still, what's the great fear of children's traditional diseases, namely measles, mumps, chickenpox, and German measles? We were taught that it was desirable for us kids to have these childhood diseases, because to get them as adults was very dangerous.

You all need to share your concerns about vaccines with others. Do not back down from a controversial discussion, keep your head on straight and lay down solid irrefutable facts. Anti-vaccine folk deserve to get a bad reputation, as well as pro-vaccine folk, when they merely make statements based on gut feelings without research. I especially encourage anyone who has done the research to be especially vocal, and share the facts you have learned with others. When lawmakers vote, they will do so with the spirit of your comments in mind. Also, I urge caution whenever stating that someone is perfectly healthy without vaccines. This comments is fully debatable by the argument that they are benefiting from herd immunity. This may be true - or it may not be - unless you have evidence, use another argument that is less refutable. Please do your best to be politically active as well as active about your stance within your own community. The pro-vaccine folk are highly active and will win this war if you are quiet and do not debate it. Stay healthy!

I am of an age that I contracted all the "childhood" diseases when I was young. I had the 3-day measles; I had German measles (rubella); mumps; and chicken pox. I'm alive and well today, although anyone who contracted chicken pox when young is at risk of developing shingles later in life. My neighbor, the same age as I, contracted measles when she was about 2, and it rendered her deaf. There are some serious consequences to these diseases, but I think there also might be serious consequences (to say nothing of lack of efficacy) for vaccines, too. Ultimately, it should be left up to parents to choose.
